The world of video games is usually poles apart from that of classic cars. It is therefore with surprise, and pleasure, that we share with you a real video game for lovers of vintage cars that we are. Who among us has not dreamed of sitting behind the wheel of a BMW M1, a Peugeot 205 T16 Evo 2 or even the very rare Porsche 959 Prodrive Rally Raid … and driving foot to the floor?
Well, thanks to Dirt 5, the dream becomes (virtual) reality.
A beautiful arcade game for car enthusiasts
A little over a year after the release of Dirt Rally 2.0, Codemaster team brings us this new Dirt opus. Compared to the last episode, this is a definite return to arcade gaming. The colors, the music, the speed… The sensations are good, if not frankly realistic (you bounce easily off the walls). There is an element of madness in this game, but also feelings that are close to racing.
The weather is somewhat capricious. The incessant changes of climatic conditions come to spice up each new lap of the circuit. You must therefore know how to adjust by observing the behavior of your vehicle as well as the color of the sky.
An amazing car list
For the collector, the fun part is about choosing your car. There are a total of 13 vehicle categories, with different profiles, but it is especially the older sports cars that have turned our eyes. What a garage! Take a look at the car list and you will understand our enthusiasm. This is a selection of true classic car enthusiasts. Well done. There are certainly some beautiful models missing, Lamborghinis or Ferraris in particular, but it is already a very good choice.

Dirt 5: our impressions
Graphically it is very successful. New and beautiful cars appear as you play. Sound wise, that’s also great. The engines roar with accuracy. Above all, sound is used to reinforce the pilot’s sense of immersion. For example, the music doesn’t seem to come from the game itself, but from speakers scattered along the track. On the other hand, we must remember to remove the comments, which are often irritating. Overall, the gameplay is very good.
In terms of circuits and events, Dirt 5 offers a wide range of choices. It ranges from rally racing to ice racing, or even arena destruction events. In all, there are around 100 races to go, taking us from Brazil to South Africa via Norway.
The “career” mode is the most complete, allowing you to race on several circuits, and earn rewards and money. The career mode is also possible to make duels against famous pilots, who are very difficult to beat (Throwdown mode). As the level rises, you should expect to leave feathers there. The career of a pilot is not for everyone.
So, are we conquered by this playful game? Conquered, the word is a bit strong. We got caught up in the game, the gameplay of which works well. We also recommend it, for example, to share our passion for old timers with the youngest console fans. But there is still a frustration to see such beautiful cars mixed with more ordinary cars of our time. Imagine a Ford Raptor alongside a Lancia Stratos… When will a 100% retro car racing game be created? And also, why not imagine recreating the atmosphere of old rallies? To the Codemaster team, congratulations on this great new opus of Dirt.
Dirt 5 is available on PC, PS4, Xbox and soon PS5
